Kendle in the Czech Republic

With the opening of our new office in the Czech Republic, Kendle now offers customers even greater coverage of Central and Eastern Europe, further strengthening our global clinical development capabilities in the Phase II-IV arena.

The Czech Republic enjoys a long tradition of healthcare, with mandatory health insurance for every Czech citizen. The country has nearly 200 hospitals and more than 35,000 doctors - one for every 3.48 people. It also has 78 medical universities and research institutes working in virtually every branch of the life sciences, as well as 36 biotechnology companies. The emphasis on universal healthcare is reflected in the country’s therapeutic expertise, which offers highly specialized centers in metabolic diseases, oncology, onco-hematology, cardiology, psychiatry, neurology, rheumatology and immunology.

By offering access to patients across a broad spectrum of therapeutic areas, the Czech Republic is an increasingly popular place to conduct clinical trials and now boasts approximately 250 new trials per year.

Attractive R&D site
The Czech Republic has stepped up efforts to become an R&D site for Western companies thanks to its reasonable costs, abundant supply of highly qualified physicians and nursing staff, and access to a wide pool of patients for clinical trials. The attractiveness of the Czech Republic in relation to other regional R&D sites is expected to gain a significant boost after the completion of the new state-of-the-art International Clinical Research Centre (ICRC) - a joint venture between the government and the Mayo Clinic.

Tax relief for new companies
New companies or joint ventures coming to the Czech Republic earn full tax relief for 10 years, as well as employment and training grants, savings on infrastructure costs and exemption from customs duty on imported equipment. As of January 2005, all companies investing in R&D can deduct 100 percent of the costs related to R&D conducted in the Czech Republic.
