With our recent acquisition of IC-Research, Kendle now offers coverage across more Latin American countries than any other global CRO, with seven offices in six countries representing 80 percent of the region’s population.
With fewer competing studies than in other regions of the world, the potential for conducting trials in Chile is high – especially those directed to the pediatric population and in the area of vaccines.
Pediatrics and vaccines potential
Out of a population of more than 16 million, nearly one-quarter of all Chileans are aged 15 years or younger. This suggests an exceptional scope for pediatric trials in the country, especially in light of recent trials showing that pediatric patients are eager to participate and their parents are willing to give their consent. Because there is no dedicated national program, vaccine trials are performed frequently in Chile.
Reverse seasons (it is summer in Chile when it is winter in the United States) allow companies to test drugs for seasonally-induced diseases year-round by including Chile and other southern hemisphere countries where Kendle has operations.
Reflecting these developments, in 2004, more than 100 clinical studies were performed in Chile (twice as many as in 1999). Two out of three of these were Phase III trials.
Regulatory and quality assurance
Chile has a well-established regulatory process based on ICH GCP. Ethics Committee and Ministry of Health (MoH) approval takes 18-20 weeks, and there is no need for an additional drug importation license in Chile because it is included in MoH approval. Both regulatory authorities and quality assurance departments have been inspecting clinical trials conducted in Chile with excellent results. In fact, Chile has one with the best standards of quality in the region.
Pneumology (Pediatric Asthma) – Respiratory disease is one of the most active therapeutic areas in Chile, (pediatric and adult studies), in different indications such as Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease – COPD
Endocrinology (Type II Diabetes, Growth Hormone Disorder/ TS, Acromegaly)
